Independent verification of our financial integrity
Last updated: January 30, 2026
Our Commitment to Accountability
At Bridgeway Foundation, we believe that transparency isn't just about showing where money goes—it's about proving it through independent verification. We undergo rigorous annual financial audits conducted by certified public accountants who have no affiliation with our organization.
Our audit standards include:
- Annual financial statement audits by independent CPAs
- IRS Form 990 review and public filing
- Single Audit compliance (when applicable)
- Internal control assessments
- Program effectiveness evaluations
All audit documents are made available to the public as part of our commitment to radical transparency.
Understanding Our Audits
What is a Financial Audit? A financial audit is an independent examination of our financial statements by a certified public accountant (CPA). The auditor reviews our financial records, internal controls, and accounting practices to provide reasonable assurance that our financial statements are free from material misstatement.
Types of Auditor Opinions:
- Unqualified (Clean) Opinion: The highest level of assurance—indicates the financial statements are fairly presented
- Qualified Opinion: Generally positive but with specific exceptions noted
- Adverse Opinion: Indicates material misstatements in the financial statements
- Disclaimer: The auditor cannot form an opinion
Bridgeway Foundation has received an unqualified (clean) opinion on all annual audits since our founding.
Form 990 Public Disclosure
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, we are required to file Form 990 with the IRS annually. This form provides detailed information about our:
- Revenue and expenses
- Assets and liabilities
- Compensation of officers and key employees
- Program accomplishments
- Governance policies
We make our Form 990 available immediately upon filing, rather than waiting for it to appear on third-party sites. This is part of our commitment to proactive transparency.
Third-Party Evaluations
In addition to our required audits, we voluntarily participate in evaluations by leading charity watchdog organizations:
Charity Navigator
- 4-Star Rating (highest possible)
- Score: 96/100
- Evaluates financial health, accountability, and transparency
GuideStar/Candid
- Platinum Seal of Transparency (highest level)
- Demonstrates commitment to transparency through comprehensive profile
BBB Wise Giving Alliance
- Meets all 20 Standards for Charity Accountability
- Covers governance, finances, fundraising, and donor privacy
These independent evaluations provide additional assurance that your donations are being used effectively and ethically.
